ABSTRACT

As urbanisation speeds up, five of the biggest challenges confronting the future of cities are environmental threats, resources, inequality, technology, and governance. Digital transformation is the answer for helping to solve some of the current and future challenges of urbanisation. Malaysia is one of the countries in Southeast Asia that responds to digital and technological change challenges. Not only has this development benefited Malaysia as a country, but the digital transformation and innovation have also spilled over to other states in Malaysia, including Sarawak. Currently, the rapid growth of digital technologies has not yet been fully translated into digital dividends even as access to the internet by businesses tripled. The Sarawak government has carried out new efforts to address these gaps through a major paradigm shift in the development of Sarawak Digital. The Sarawak government embarked on a journey towards digital transformation and developed a state with the concept of ‘Digital Sarawak’. On December 13, 2017, Sarawak’s chief minister, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, launched the Sarawak Multimedia Board and, at the same time, launched the first version of the Sarawak Digital Economic Strategy Book 2018–2022, which marks the start of the digitalisation transformation in Sarawak.
