ABSTRACT

Higher education institutions (HEIs) play a central role in knowledge creation and production through research, learning and teaching. In fact, knowledge management (KM) has gained acceptance in the academic and has a major role to play in the knowledge economy, bringing new challenges for HEIs. The educational landscape has evolved from a traditional teaching environment to a highly open and dynamic knowledge-based environment due to the large adoption of computers, internet, intranet and instructional software applications including social media. However, the studies on the utilisation of social media within HEIs is still limited. Upon realising the importance of the concept of knowledge sharing through social media, the aim of this chapter is to extend the knowledge within the literature and to explore KM practices through enterprise social media (ESM) while identifying the contributing factors that may facilitate and hinder the implementation. The findings highlight issues involving conceptual understanding, knowledge-sharing culture and perceived usefulness. The study further contributes with the development of a conceptual framework for adopting and effectively implementing ESM as a KM system in HEIs.
