ABSTRACT

The objective of this chapter is to analyze the visibly growing involvement of international institutions in university-level translator training to identify the rationale, function, practices, content, and types of competences covered by such outreach to universities. We survey a number of initiatives by international institutions to map and compare various forms of support for and involvement in university-level training. We propose the following categorization of practices: collaborative networks, internships, authentic translation/terminology projects, visiting/lecture/workshop schemes, seminars, train-the-trainer, and continuing professional development activities. We argue that the most important functions of institutional outreach include work-based learning by future (institutional) translators, professionalization of translator training, exchange of information on translation needs and on emerging trends, and of best practices. Cooperation between institutions and universities provides advantages for both constituencies, as well as for other market actors, and promotes the improvement of language service provision and of translation as a profession.
