ABSTRACT

Intellectual curiosity, a willingness to acquire new skills, and an ability to master new subjects quickly are the hallmarks of successful translators. This is particularly the case at the United Nations, where translation services are mandated to deliver high-quality translations of parliamentary documents covering an ever-increasing range of topics in a timely manner and at a time when ongoing technological advances are revolutionizing their working methods. This case study provides an overview of the principles and approaches, as well as the tools, mechanisms, and strategies used to support the learning and development of the translators in the six translation services at United Nations Headquarters in New York over the course of their careers.
