ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an introductory overview of the theory and research on transnationalism and translanguaging in the context of Korean as a heritage language. It provides a discussion on the “trans-turn” that has advanced the field of language education since the early 1990s wherein the sociopolitical issues that surround education and bilingualism are foregrounded. This chapter also introduces 12 original chapters that are inspired by and draw from translanguaging, translingual, and transnational approaches to teaching the Korean language as a heritage language.
