ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how conflict occurs in groups, including conflict development, engagement, and resolution. It argues that conflict is inherent in groups and should be engaged reflectively, rather than avoided. Group members can develop self-knowledge, conflict management skills, and communication processes such as negotiation and mediation. The chapter also explores how diversity relates to conflict in groups. This includes describing challenges faced by diverse groups, including power imbalance and faultlines, and explains how group members can develop intercultural conflict competence skills. The chapter concludes by discussing how conflicts can be reframed and transformed through dialogue and describes some specific examples of dialogue in diverse groups.
