ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the messages group members exchange with one another in accomplishing a group task or goal. While much group research focuses on group tasks, this chapter introduces the relational dimension of group interaction, and explains three aspects of relational communication. First, the chapter distinguishes the difference between relational and task messages in group conversations. Group members must exchange both types of messages to accomplish task and relational goals. Second, the chapter guides readers in developing an appreciation for the interdependent influence of task and relational messages in group conversations. Third, the chapter identifies a variety of relational outcomes associated with group communication.
