ABSTRACT

Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany have not signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). All three governments publicly voice that they are in favour of a world free of nuclear weapons, as stipulated by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Supporting the TPNW, with a view to joining it at an appropriate time, would align the countries’ actions with their proposed political agenda of reaching a world without nuclear weapons and enable them to influence the future development of the treaty. Moreover, public opinion is in favour of this step which would contribute to mutually reinforcing the TPNW and the NPT.
