ABSTRACT

Bullying is one of the most insidious school behaviours that threaten young people’s self-concept, their engagement with school, life, and overall well-being. Over the years, many interventions have been introduced to combat school bullying and victimisation. They focused either on creating awareness of bullying behaviours, and proposing solutions, or empowering bystanders to stand up to bullies. Positive psychology offers yet another approach, which to date has not been explored fully. This chapter reviews the literature associated with applying positive psychology research to enhance pro-social behaviour and prevent and reduce bullying in schools. Specifically, it focuses on strength-based approaches to bullying and offers practical ways to apply them effectively in schools.
