ABSTRACT

The last two decades have witnessed a growing recognition of the importance of taking a system-wide approach to promoting and protecting well-being in educational contexts. As research demonstrates the benefits of utilising the multiple levers for change across school ecosystems, educators and practitioners are grappling with the many challenges of turning the concept of whole-school well-being into a practical and achievable reality. Working with hundreds of schools in diverse contexts has helped us identify common processes and practices that promote well-being in ways that are culturally appropriate and reflect the specific needs of individual school communities. This chapter reviews this process, which we call Navigating Well-being Change, sharing how schools have used it, over time, to create a whole-system approach to well-being that is tailored to their needs and resources, a topic much overlooked so far by the field of positive education.
