ABSTRACT

Positive relationships are a foundation for well-being. They are a cornerstone of positive education and physical and mental health. This chapter presents the rationale for the need for educators to take an active role in facilitating relationships with students and colleagues. It presents three types of connections: friendship, high-quality connections, and momentary connections that help school communities enhance their well-being. Next, it introduces the concept of “mattering” as a human need, the lack of which leads to adverse outcomes. Finally, it provides practical advice on how teachers can facilitate mattering in schools.
