ABSTRACT

Acquired amusia is an impairment of musical capacity that can occur following a brain injury. Depending on the location of the neurological injury, multiple musical functions can be impaired (such as pitch, rhythm, timbre, melody, and musical memory). In addition, when people sustain complex neurological injuries this can create clinical presentations that make formal standardised neuropsychological assessment challenging. This chapter addresses a structured, behavioural based, bedside assessment to try to understand a chance observation of an apparent impairment of musical appreciation in an otherwise highly skilled music critic, to ensure that a person-centred approach to improve quality of life was facilitated.
