ABSTRACT

The introduction to this volume sets out the key concepts which will be explored through the following chapters. We briefly review theories relating to the (re)construction of borders and processes of ‘bordering’ or ‘borderisation’, and outline the importance of analysing these processes using a feminist intersectional lens to understand the ways in which social relations of gender, race, class – among others – shape both the ways in which borders are constructed and the experiences of individuals as they try to cross these borders. We then provide a brief overview of the structure of the book and the contribution of the various chapters.
