ABSTRACT

This chapter indicates that we have an epistemic problem on our hands: the only way social sciences have addressed the issue of cultural differences, in so far as they have addressed it at all, is by transforming the ‘other’ into ‘another’, that is, into a variant of the Western culture. In the case of India, this has had absurd consequences: from Hinduism to the caste system, myriad factoids are produced but this has not helped in understanding Indian society or culture. Ignorance has been masquerading as knowledge for over 200 years. The author explains the title of this book within this framework.
