ABSTRACT

Joseon-Jok is the group name of Chinese nationals of Korean descent who migrated from Korea to China and maintained some Korean traditions, such as language and cultural artifacts, in China. Now, they are the largest group of foreign migrant workers in Korea. Although the number of Joseon-Jok coming to South Korea has increased continuously, little attention has been made to help them maintain their health and well-being. This chapter investigates problems and difficulties in promoting public health among Joseon-Jok workers and recommends theory- and evidence-based health communication strategies that can guide them to scientific public health information and accessible healthcare facilities. Our recommendations for effective health communication include (1) disseminating information about over-the-counter medicines and their scientifically proven effectiveness, (2) using an opinion leader-based communication strategy for them to make evidence-based health behavior decisions, and (3) constructing a mobile and reciprocal communication system between authorized public health institutions and Joseon-Jok.
