ABSTRACT

The new term ‘Space Domain Awareness’ reflects the shift from space as a benign environment to space as a warfighting domain, corresponding to the creation of US Space Command and US Space Force. China and India as rising powers and their militarisation of space, in Dimitrios Stroikos’ words, have further consolidated the notion that conflict in space is inevitable. Hoerber and Forganni showed that security considerations are already part of European space policy and that security is becoming more and more important in European politics. This growing concern about European security is, however, not limited to space policy. A civilian and peaceful power in space may very well change the equation of other realist powers.
