ABSTRACT

The use of animals in tourism experiences presents important ethical considerations for humanity, generally, and the tourism industry, specifically. While various forms of social media are helping to raise awareness of the plight of captive and wild animals used in such situations, the increasing number of international tourism arrivals (1.5 billion in 2019), suggests that tourism organizations will continue to utilize captive and wild animals as part of the tourism experience. This research sought to understand how animal advocacy and sanctuary organizations define and apply the principles associated with justice, specifically as it relates to their care of and/or advocacy for animals. This research lays the foundation for better understanding the extent to which achieving justice for animals used in tourism may be possible and assessing the opportunities to make this a reality.
