ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the ways botanical metaphors in Traill’s book were used to assert not only the physical cultivation of the wilds of North America but also the transplantation and reconstitution of British culture in the Canadian wilderness, which would also identify the “local”—and potentially overlooked—varieties of settler Canadian expression.
