ABSTRACT

Spadaro focuses on the artist and collector O’Tama Kiyohara Ragusa and the collection of over 4,000 Japanese art objects (now housed in Luigi Pigorini Museum, Rome) she helped build in Japan and import to Palermo, Italy. It will demonstrate how the practice of collecting enabled O’Tama to assert her own agency and to participate in Japanese and Italian artistic and cultural developments, becoming the first woman Vice-President of the Istituto d’Arte di Palermo.
