ABSTRACT

In this chapter we look into the entanglements of the three concepts—care, passivity, and vulnerability—with an aim to add to the project of revision of the well-established construction of the Western project of science. This chapter offers a reflection on economies of care as a point of departure for working out of an inclusive and diversified landscape of knowledges. It also argues that in order to fully grasp the potential of thusly reconceptualized procedures of generating knowledge, it is necessary to unlearn our (Western) mental routines and perceptual habits as well as to learn how to open to the new, even in situations in which such opening could entail certain risks. These risks, we argue, seem to be worth taking if we want to liberate ourselves from the trap of positivist and neoliberal ways of thinking as much as to invest in the renewal of the spirit of the socially responsible citizen science aimed at building more liveable futures.
