ABSTRACT

HAPPY ISLAND is the title of La Ribot’s 2018 creation for Dançando com a Diferença, a project that has existed since 2001, which includes a dance company since 2002, located on Madeira Island, one of the outermost regions of Europe.

Established as an inclusive dance project, it maintains different initiatives of proximity to the population of Madeira; since 2017 including Viseu, a city and municipality in the central region of Portugal, where a hub has grown. The company Dançando com a Diferença aims to stand out for its repertoire, with creations by renowned choreographers, and has progressively been recognized as an important Portuguese reference in the performing arts.

Initially, we present our overall project, the different intervention spheres and the relationships maintained within the spaces where we operate.

With a particular focus on the company, we will present some evidence of the work being developed within this structure, as a way to ease the territorial and political limitations of the autonomous region of Madeira.

Taking these limitations into account, we explain how needs concerning the internationalization process have fostered the development of specific methods and relations regarding the work with people with disabilities, resulting in ways to counter the territorial and tour management restrictions.
