ABSTRACT
This chapter examines aspects of child safeguarding not commonly covered within textbooks, which discuss the history and the evolution of safeguarding together with the legislation and policy. Safeguarding is a fast-moving topic that has greatly expanded over the past decade. This chapter moves away from the traditional approach and seeks to explore challenging subjects such as child on child abuse and harmful sexual behaviour by children, acknowledging the concerns practitioners have in confronting these issues. The child online looks at the complexities of the internet and the effects on children, and how they might be kept safe. Finally, the chapter discusses drug use, the ‘county line’ issue and connected crimes of modern slavery and human trafficking. Practical advice is given together with case studies to assist understanding. There are opportunities to reflect and a ‘do not forget the parents’ section with each subject, ensuring parents are appropriately considered.
