ABSTRACT

Living in a multicultural world children must learn to dispel the ideas of stereotyping and personal biases, and ultimately live in a world of inclusiveness, understanding and respect. This chapter begins by discussing what is meant by ‘culture’ and the Cultures Continuum: monocultural, cross-cultural, multicultural and intercultural. Using a strength-based positive research approach, six international schools from Italy, Romania, Malaysia, China, Kenya and Dubai showcase their ‘good and effective practice’ in embedding intercultural competencies; attitudes (e.g. openness), knowledge (e.g. self-awareness), skills (e.g. listening and observing), internal outcomes (e.g. adaptability, flexibility and empathy), and external outcomes (e.g. behaviour and effective/appropriate communication), in their learning environment, curriculum, learning and teaching and assessment methods. They share multicultural/intercultural activities and highlight how they have responded to challenges in these turbulent times.
