ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a curriculum model—the Challenge Leading to Engagement, Achievement, and Results (CLEAR) Curriculum Model—that supports the development of curriculum characterized by evidence-based and appropriate learning experiences for gifted learners. To date, six language arts units have been developed using the CLEAR model. There are two third-grade units in Poetry and Fairy Tales, two fourth-grade units in Fiction and Nonfiction, and two fifth-grade units in Research and Rhetoric. The CLEAR Curriculum Model is a synthesis of the strongest and most compatible curricular elements from three well-regarded models in gifted education: the differentiated instruction model; the Schoolwide Enrichment Model; and the depth and complexity model. In CLEAR units, teachers can explore through real-time practice in the classroom the basic tenets and key elements of the most respected curriculum models in gifted education. Many teachers of gifted students lack access to quality curriculum and professional learning opportunities that provide knowledge and understanding of the key features of quality curriculum.
