ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information about the professional learning strategies specific to social studies that are important for teachers of gifted students, as well as those individuals responsible for planning such training, to know and understand. Modifications and additions based on best practices in gifted education will ensure that trainers bridge the gap between general education and gifted education. The College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework includes four dimensions: developing questions and inquiries, applying disciplinary tools and concepts, evaluating sources and using evidence, and communicating conclusions and taking informed action. The use of the C3 Framework as a guiding document for developing professional learning experiences should ensure that the basic premises of social studies education will serve as the foundation for all that is done to train the teachers who will work with gifted students. Standards in gifted education, standards that undergird professional learning, and the C3 Framework served as the backdrop.
