ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the assumed educational outcome for the professional learning experiences for language teachers to more effectively differentiate for advanced language learners. With foreign language education, professional learning goals cover a wide range of relevant content in foreign language instruction. To achieve student advanced competency in foreign language, teachers must be well trained with meaningful professional learning experiences. Understanding cultural, socioeconomic, linguistic, and academic diversity among the student population enables foreign language teachers in working with different learners. In planning professional learning to coalesce foreign language and gifted education, considering what to include is important so as to not regret the price of the time paid for it. For teachers in foreign language classrooms, a needs assessment should be conducted prior to designing professional learning activities to understand their proficiency level and what they view to be their greatest areas of professional learning needs to differentiate their teaching.
