ABSTRACT

School nurses play a highly varied and unique role in the health and wellness of children with disabilities in the school system. The primary focus of a school nurse is to ensure that all students within the system will be able to maximize their educational opportunities. Children with disabilities, especially those who are medically fragile, who have complex medical issues, or who have trauma-related disabilities, can lose whole chunks of educational time because of medical issues. School nurses are required to establish Individualized Health Plans (IHP) and Emergency Action Plans (EAP) for all students with special needs and disabilities. The nurse often acts as a liaison between the school and the medical community. School nurses also attempt to enhance awareness and educate students on positive health habits and the self-management of their health. The management of children with chronic, ongoing health problems requires the school nurse to assist in coordination of this care between parents, providers, and the school.
