ABSTRACT

The Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988 was the first time a federal act defined assistive technology and services and promoted the use of assistive technology (AT) for all people with disabilities. The AT specialist should maintain contact with both the student's general education teacher and his or her parents. The AT specialist would also provide training to the classroom teacher on the selected device so it may be integrated into the general education classroom. Parents of students with disabilities need to be included when services for AT are considered or delivered to their child. An important factor when considering the choice of device is how the student will use the AT device at home. Text readers allow the text that appears on the computer screen to be read aloud using computer-generated voices that are already included in the operating system of most computers.
