ABSTRACT

The American School Counselor Association National Model maintained that professional school counselors are charged with serving the academic, career, and social/emotional needs of all students including students with disabilities. Professional school counselors implement comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling programs (CDGCP) based on a foundation that describes the learning processes and standards provided to all students including those with disabilities. Professional school counselors have special expertise in social/emotional issues and can provide guidance lessons to the entire school, to a particular grade level, or to one classroom. Professional school counselors have expertise in career and lifespan development, and, therefore, can be instrumental in postsecondary planning for students with disabilities. Students with disabilities may need crisis counseling or counseling for developmentally typical challenges and transitions. The professional school counselor can implement programming that enhances the understanding of the experiences of students with disabilities.
