ABSTRACT

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) of 2004 mandates free appropriate education for all children with disabilities between the ages of 3 and 21 years. Adapted physical education includes adapting, modifying, and/or changing a physical activity so it is as appropriate for the person with a disability as it is for the person without a disability. Attitudinal barriers toward disabilities and physical activity often restrict not only what children with disabilities are encouraged to do, but also how they perceive their own physical abilities. Assessment is defined as an information-gathering technique. Inclusion in general physical education is about creating a learning environment in which students with disabilities have equal access to learning fitness, sport, and motor skills. Paraeducators often are assigned to assist a child with disabilities in the general physical education setting. Physical education teachers often struggle to identify effective ways to communicate with parents.
