ABSTRACT

Orientation is having the capability to use the remaining senses in order to understand one's location within an environment at every given moment in time, while mobility is having facility, capacity, or capability of movement. Orientation and mobility encompasses all areas of life including independent travel, safety, confidence, basic needs, and general health and well-being. Educational policies such as the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA) sustained the concept that services for students with disabilities must be determined on a case-by-case basis. The role of the orientation and mobility specialist crosses many disciplines. General education teachers, school counselors, or other educational specialists may have many questions related to orientation and mobility. Students who are visually impaired with or without additional disabilities maybe eligible for O&M services.
