ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of learning assessment development and implementation in the classroom. It focuses on the use of performance- or product-based assessment tools that can assist the teacher in understanding gifted student performance. With advanced learners, educators face key considerations around assessment, because of the many ways in which grade-level assessments may not be an appropriate match for the learners and the curriculum within which they engage. The chapter includes applications of the use of research-based performance assessments in the content area of science. Given the depth and complexity of gifted learners' cognitive abilities, tests for this population should emphasize high-level thinking and processing skills. The International Baccalaureate assessment model measures the performance of students against the main objectives of the program by using a combination of external and internal assessment methods in both written and oral modes.
