ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to acknowledge and honor the indigenous communities native to the regions and recognize that Purdue University is built on the ancestral and unceded lands of the Potawatomi, Shawnee, Miami, and Delaware peoples. Intervention and change are warranted to end this trend and the pervasive and longstanding course of underrepresentation of Indigenous youth as gifted and talented. American Indian and Alaska Nativeyouth have less access to schools that identify youth with gifts and talents than do students from other races, and when they do have access, with very few exceptions, they are woefully underrepresented in gifted programs across the United States. In between Justyna Bureau of Indian Education School and Navajo Prep, she attended a middle and high school near a major university in the Midwest, where she estimated 90% of her teachers were White and where there were few other Native youth.
