ABSTRACT

This chapter explores an in-depth look at essential components of an effective mathematics curriculum for gifted students along with equally essential instructional strategies that create the proper learning environment to help students explore the curriculum. A prime consideration for developing or evaluating effective curricula for gifted students is that the curriculum be based on best practices in teaching and learning outlined by experts in the gifted and talented field. Mathematicians and math educators also value the same type of experiences for students. An inquiry-based approach should be the heart and soul of the curriculum investigations. Students who delve into this critical and creative problem-solving process will have built the support they need to easily connect their new mathematical knowledge to prior knowledge. Teachers need to create a spirit of inquiry in the classroom where students are eager to take a risk and share an idea.
