ABSTRACT

Many children who are gifted and talented spend most of their time learning in classrooms with children who have varying levels of ability, multiple interests, and a range of readiness. This chapter presents a model for writing units to differentiate learning experiences by providing a starting point for teachers who primarily have been using one set of learning experiences for the whole class. The model is a framework for teachers to embark on differentiation in their classrooms. Good planning is essential for appropriate differentiation just as it is for effective teaching. In fact, differentiation is a necessary component of effective teaching. Unless planning is conducted well, there is no basis for differentiating learning experiences. A learning environment in which students have an element of choice and can engage in learning experiences that are matched to their needs and interests is a positive one for teachers and students.
