ABSTRACT

Educational public relations programs assist in interpreting public attitudes, identifying and helping shape policies and procedures in the public interest, and carrying on involvement and information activities which earn public understanding and support. Professionals in gifted education have voiced their concerns regarding the lack of PR and advocacy for several decades. The quality of students’ learning is a powerful tool for ongoing PR for advocacy. The value of gifted education shared with the community through continuous PR cannot be overstated. The broadest of all audiences is the general public, which includes both people inside the educational system and those who are not overtly connected to the schools. PR activities need to be approached with careful planning to maximize their effectiveness. Organizations need to appoint a committee to coordinate their PR activities. Individual teachers and parents who want to contribute to improving the public’s view of gifted education should locate at least one or two others with whom they can work.
