ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the types of funding agencies that exist and how to locate them, as well as how to develop an idea and write a grant proposal. A staff development day for teachers of the gifted at a local university offered her an overview of researching funding sources and procedures for writing grant proposals. At a time when financial resources are scarce and there is a continued reluctance to fund new programs in Washington, advocates feel the current focus should be on accountability of addressing the needs of these students in schools. There are several other differences between public and private funding sources. For example, public funding sources generally have the most money to award and are more likely to pay all project costs. Private funding sources include foundations, corporations, and professional and trade associations. Once the project idea has been determined, the search for the funding source that best fits the need can begin.
