ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the gleaned from research and theory regarding how to develop mathematical talent and discuss how that aligns with my classroom teaching experience working with emerging mathematicians. It presents options to develop mathematical talent. The primary basis for developing and offering programs to develop mathematical talent would be because the local education agency values developing mathematical talent. The second lever for developing mathematical talent is related to mathematical content but to how students approach mathematics. Travis’s parents once told me that they had to check on him after he went to bed because he would frequently be working problems under his comforter by flashlight. Building on the work of many others who sought to develop talent, Subotnik, Olszewski-Kubilius, and Worrell developed a comprehensive mega model that integrates the most promising components of previous talent development models. The method for developing mathematical talent that has the most research supporting its use is acceleration.
