Risk-taking is an inherent part of the creative process. If students are to realize their potential, to develop the skills in which they are the least confi-dent, to step outside of what is comfortable, they need to have the freedom to indulge in unfettered exploration. Improvisation is an activity that can be abjectly terrifying, again because of the element of vulnerability. The fear is that one might open one’s mouth and say something that will reveal one to be stupid, or unoriginal, or insane. The most basic and most important tenet of improvisation, the first thing they will teach the students in any improv class or book is always say yes, never deny.
