ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to encourage teachers to adopt an approach to teaching science that values creativity, given that both scientific discovery and learning are intrinsically creative processes. Science as a teaching subject present some particular challenges to the teacher who wishes to teach creatively. The kind of science education that best supports future citizens certainly would include basic knowledge of core scientific concepts and ideas. Good teaching is highly creative, as the teacher works in real time to create bridges from where the learner’s thinking is, to where the curriculum suggests his or her thinking needs to go. Science is an inherently creative activity that relies upon scientists developing levels of expertise, aspects of which can only ever be accessed through their intuitions. Citizens need to be able to make informed decisions about their consumption choices, their civic roles, their judgments in supporting various pressure groups, policies, and political parties.
