ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at some of the recommendations for preventing suicide among the gifted population. It provides recommendations about how to address and prevent suicidal behavior among students with gifts and talents. For the most part, prevention recommendations for the general population of children and adolescents serve as a guide for suicide prevention in students with gifts and talents. The chapter reviews research about personality variables and suicidal behavior as a further means of detailing which gifted youth may be more at risk for suicide. Prevention strategies for schools with gifted students include vigorously meeting the educative needs of gifted and talented students and possibly scheduling individual or group counseling as a part of the educational gifted curriculum. Cross et al. suggested that schools strive for a balance of positive and negative themes and characters in the curriculum.
