ABSTRACT

Gifted education in rural communities is a fairly new topic of concern to educators, and an increasing number of researchers and educators of the gifted are paying greater attention to the growing rural populations and the need to develop talent among their students. This chapter aims to address this problem and to increase visibility of the need for rural gifted education. It concludes with recommendations for becoming proactive in reaching rural gifted students. The US Census reported that children living in rural environments represent a substantial minority of all United States students. Gifted students in rural environments were less likely to be seen by their teachers in the one dimension of giftedness, but rather as composites of their activities and talents. Educators of the gifted can identify conscientious parents to seek their input in ensuring that Frasier's Four A's are addressed by rural gifted education programs.
