ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on elementary-level specialized schools that cater toward gifted and talented children. It draws on types of programming used among specialized schools for the gifted, recognizing that the ideas are not exclusive to specialized gifted settings but that there are a wide variety of programmatic elements that are specifically recognized and used effectively with gifted learners. Specialized learning environments bring together pupils of similar ability so that instruction can be pitched at the appropriate conceptual level for the students, so that the students with special abilities can stimulate each other, and to challenge them intellectually and academically. Affective components of an elementary program generally consist of the social and emotional development, awareness of unique needs, and strategies to address the needs of the gifted children. The educational program is designed for the gifted learner to experience intellectual challenges, just as their neurotypical peers do, and to learn tools to meet that challenge.
