ABSTRACT

In social studies, the consistent use of advanced readings on problems, issues, and themes that characterize history; the use of primary source documents for analysis; and the conducting of social science research all point to a rigorous curriculum for secondary students in the subject area. Targeted interventions that include well-designed, rigorous curriculum provided to low-income gifted learners early in their schooling are critical for such learners’ future success. Concepts that make connections among the various domains of science as well as to other areas of learning are the most crucial to use as organizers for curriculum work. The nature of curriculum planning for learners in specialized school settings requires careful planning by a team of experts in each content area along with specialists in gifted education. Curriculum documents such as the just described are needed by all stake-holders in specialized schools for the gifted, from the board, to the administration, to the teaching staff, to students and parents.
