ABSTRACT

Climate change is creating problems that were predicted in the past: rising sea levels, shrinking glaciers, changes in the seasons, and altered harvests due to warming. The philosophical community is trying to sort out what humans owe to the environment. Even given a general awareness of the environmental crisis, however, a person might find themselves lacking important information. Although the Minimally Decent Samaritan is a fine basis for moral responsibility, many philosophers maintain that moral obligation to the environment goes beyond the minimum to the point of sacrifice. The environmental crisis is already severe enough that people have to be proactive. Business as usual is beginning to seem indecent, which means that society may need a new definition of minimum decency.
