ABSTRACT
Money allows people to buy property, make investments, and support their loved ones. Although people often argue that having both money and an enjoyable lifestyle is best, Henry David Thoreau said that money gets in the way of living life to the fullest. Thoreau warned against choosing a conventional lifestyle in which people commit to a profession that will make money. Most people would want to be independent and make enough money to support themselves, rather than live off the kindness of others. Although Thoreau’s life showcases the impact of an immaterial gift, Smith’s opinion could still hold true. Just like art students and history majors, writers are known for doing what they love, not for making money. College is expensive, and job opportunities for English majors are not guaranteed.
