ABSTRACT

This chapter features a review of students' life aspects and how teachers can use their keen eyes to see and listening ears to hear in order to notice talent in children from a variety of backgrounds. Life aspects traditionally studied in schooling research include students' race/ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Preservice and inservice teachers often have limited cultural experiences, making it difficult to envision themselves in a setting with students who represent a high level of diversity. In regard to the theme of keenly seeing and carefully listening as a means to deeply understand students, Aikenhead stated “Not only is cross-cultural science education founded on respect and inclusion of students' indigenous science, but also its humanistic ideology implies responsiveness to student heterogeneity. According to Cherng and Davis, preservice teachers' attitudes persist with deficit thinking about students unlike themselves.
