ABSTRACT

A Socratic Circle is a discussion method that inspires participants to complete deep reading of a text and engage in meaningful discussion of that text. This chapter engages in a Socratic conversation about the rationale, processes, and outcomes of Socratic Circles. Many language arts objectives are met through Socratic Circles: speaking and listening skills, reading and writing skills, learning how to respond in discussions, as well as the ability to make connections. Integrating knowledge and skills across content areas is extremely important. Socratic Circles are not the only thing we do in class. Students continue to think, ponder, and discuss ideas from Socratic Circles well beyond the class period.
