ABSTRACT

Creativity is a nebulous concept with an array of definitions and ways of attempting to measure it. The fact that creativity has its own ring indicates its importance in educating gifted students. Sometimes it is difficult to design lessons that appeal to students’ creativity while meeting the standards. Many students may be apprehensive about their poetic abilities and the evaluation they receive on their poetry. Using finger painting to inspire students’ own poetry and using that experience to inform their reading of other poetry is not as widely used and reaches students on a unique level. Designing a lesson plan that teaches students to read creatively can be difficult because poetry is highly interpretive, with each reader viewing the ideas and emotions presented through his or her own set of experiences.
