ABSTRACT

There are myriad arguments beyond adding relevance to a curriculum that can be posed to substantiate the integration of current events in a differentiated curriculum for the gifted. Students need to understand that the process of reporting and disseminating the news has occurred in societies and cultures throughout time and has included a variety of mediums: writing on caves, smoke signals, quilts hanging on tree limbs, and semaphores. The importance of teaching information literacy is defined in the 21st Century Skills, as well as other documents articulating the pressing academic needs of today’s students. Accessing and reporting information are crucial skills for gifted students to acquire and these skills can be realized as gifted students also recognize the impact and influence of current events on people, places, problems, and issues.
